Switchboard Upgrades across Sydney

The switchboard is the part of your electrical installation that decides what happens when something goes wrong. A modern board disconnects a faulty circuit in a fraction of a second. An old one with ceramic rewireable fuses simply melts a wire, and offers no protection at all against the kind of fault that gives a person a shock.

If your board still has porcelain fuse holders with fuse wire in them, or no safety switches, an upgrade is the single most worthwhile electrical improvement you can make to the property. Below is what an upgrade actually involves and how to judge whether yours needs one.

When to get it looked at

Signs worth acting on rather than waiting out.

Ceramic rewireable fuses

Porcelain holders you pull out and rewire. They protect the wiring from overload but do nothing to protect a person from electrocution.

No safety switches (RCDs)

If nothing on the board is labelled RCD or "safety switch" and there is no test button, you have no residual current protection.

A board that buzzes, crackles or feels warm

Both indicate a loose or deteriorating connection generating heat.

Scorch marks, discolouration or a burnt smell at the board

Evidence of past or ongoing overheating.

Breakers that trip when you run normal appliances

Often a sign the board and circuits no longer match how the property is used.

No room left for another circuit

Common when a board was sized for a much smaller house than the one that now exists.

Asbestos backing board

Common in older Sydney homes. It changes how the work must be handled and needs to be identified before anything starts.

The process, start to finish

Inspect what is actually there

I look at the board, the consumer mains feeding it, the earthing arrangement and the condition of the existing circuits. What is behind the board matters as much as the board itself.

Tell you what the board needs and why

Some boards need full replacement; some need safety switches added and nothing more. You get told which yours is, and I am happy to explain the reasoning.

Fixed price before any work starts

Including whether the earthing needs upgrading, which is a common and easily hidden extra.

Arrange the power outage

A board change means the power is off for a period. That gets scheduled around you rather than sprung on you.

Install, test and label

New board installed, every circuit tested, and labelling done properly so the next person can tell what is what.

Certificate of Compliance

You receive a CCEW for the work, and notification goes to the network operator where that is required.

Licensing, standards & certification

Switchboard work is carried out to AS/NZS 3000. Current Wiring Rules require residual current device protection on final subcircuits, which is why an upgrade normally means adding safety switches rather than just swapping fuses for breakers. A safety switch is designed to disconnect within about 30 milliseconds when it detects roughly 30 milliamps leaking to earth — fast and sensitive enough to make the difference in an electrocution. Work is done under Licence No. 221442C and certified with a CCEW.

What affects the price

Every job is quoted after I have seen it — these are the things that move the number:

  • Whether it is a full board replacement or safety switches added to a sound existing board
  • How many circuits the property has, and how many are being separated onto their own protection
  • The condition of the consumer mains and the earthing system, which often need attention at the same time
  • Whether the existing backing board contains asbestos and must be handled accordingly
  • Single-phase or three-phase supply
  • Access and the physical location of the board
  • Whether the network operator needs to attend or be notified

Switchboard Upgrades questions

The clearest sign is ceramic fuses with fuse wire, or the absence of any safety switch with a test button. Beyond that: buzzing, warmth, scorch marks, nuisance tripping, or no spare capacity. If you are unsure, a photo of the open board usually tells me a great deal.

For a straightforward domestic board change, most of a working day. I will give you a realistic window before the day so you can plan around it — particularly worth knowing if you work from home or have medical equipment.

There is no rule that forces you to replace a working board simply because it is old. However, once you alter or add circuits, the new work has to comply with current Wiring Rules, which in practice usually means adding RCD protection. Insurers and building inspectors also take a keen interest in old boards.

A circuit breaker protects the wiring from overload and short circuit — it stops cables overheating. A safety switch (RCD) protects people, by detecting current leaking to earth through a person or a fault. They do different jobs, and you want both. An RCBO combines the two in one device.

It can be. Many older Sydney boards are mounted on asbestos backing. It is identified before work starts and handled under the appropriate rules — it does not stop the upgrade, but it does affect the method and the price.
